Hubert Leamon Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Hubert Nelson Leamon announces his passing on Friday, April 10th, 2026, at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Center, at the age of 79 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Port aux Basques, Hubert was the son of the late Abraham and Ellen (nee Anderson) Leamon.

Hubert leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his loving wife of 54 years, Alice (nee Jeans) Leamon, children, Judy (Barry) Leamon, Darlene (Jon) Leamon-Delorme, Alice (Chris) Leamon, Christine (Sebastian) Leamon, and Marlene Leamon, grandchildren, Allyn (Brad) Andrews, Lorna (Daniel) Osmond, Mariea Francis, Helena (Zachary) Hickey, Alex (Madison) Sheppard, Erin Sheppard and great grandchildren, “Poppy’s Boy” Brandon, Emily, Alison and Madison.

He also leaves to mourn his brother, Abraham Leamon, plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Hubert was predeceased by his brothers Louis Leamon, Cecil (Mamie) Leamon, John Henry Leamon, sisters Elsie Legge, Lavina (Steven) Alley, Ellen Leamon and sister-in-law Gladys (Frampton) Leamon. Mother and father-in-law, Jim and Mary (Organ) Jeans, and brothers-in-laws Joe Jeans, Lawrence Jeans, Ed Gosse, and Fred Thomas.

Hubert’s life was marked by independence, hard work, and a deep connection to both land and people. At just 16, he left home and hitchhiked to Ontario to join his brother Louis—an early sign of the determination and adventurous spirit that would define his life. By 17, he was working at the Isle Aux Morts fish plant, and when he turned 18, he set out for Toronto, beginning years of travel and work across Canada.

As a young man, Hubert took on a wide range of demanding jobs from coast to coast. He worked in sawmills and on steel bridge crews in British Columbia for Canadian National Railway and travelled extensively with the railway’s steel gang through northern Ontario, including Coldwell and other communities that have since become ghost towns. His work was often physically intense and dangerous—rock scaling along cliffs and handling dynamite during railway construction. He also spent time firefighting in the Kananaskis Valley, working in greenhouses in Calgary, and at the CP Powerhouse in Winnipeg.

Hubert later took a carpentry course, where he excelled, developing strong skills and a deep pride in his craftsmanship. He built chairs, picnic tables, wooden garbage boxes, and signage for the Southwest Coast Development—each piece reflecting the care and quality he brought to everything he did.

In the late 1990s, he and his wife spent summers farming in the Annapolis Valley, working on two different farms. Despite his years on the move, Hubert always remained grounded in a love for the outdoors and working with his hands. He had a natural way with animals—there wasn’t a cat he couldn’t tame—and he took great pride in raising his chickens, turkeys, ducks and even quail. He also had a true gift for gardening, known for his green thumb. He was everyone’s favorite uncle, always ready with a story, a laugh, or a helping hand.

In late summer and early fall, he could often be found berry picking, especially bake apples, marsh berries and partridge berries, or out on the water during the years he owned a fishing boat. Through every chapter of his life, Hubert embraced hard work, adventure, and the simple joys of nature.

The family would like to thank Dr Alnabbot, his receptionist Loretta, Dr. Benjamin, and the staff at the Emergency and Acute Care Department, at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Center.
