It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Edward Winston ‘Wince’ Billard announces his peaceful passing on Monday, June 29th, 2026, at Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Center, at the age of 85. Born in Burgeo, he was the son of the late Herbert and Lillian (nee Neil) Billard.

Wince will be forever missed by his loving wife of 58 years, Verna Billard, sons, Arthur (Jody) Billard, Brian (Ken) Billard, grandchildren, Judy MacIsaac-Billard, Hanna Billard, and Maggie Billard.

Wince also leaves to mourn, sisters, Sheila (Jerry) Billard and Gertie Cook, sister-in-law, Lois Billard, brothers in law, Gordon (Linda) Farrell, Keith (Connie) Farrell, plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Raised in Grand Bruit, Newfoundland, Wince carried a deep love for his hometown throughout his life. In 1959, he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he built his career and later raised his family. Following his retirement, he returned to Newfoundland each summer, and for the past 16 years he proudly called Diamond Cove his seasonal home.

A day spent on the water or returning to the shores of Grand Bruit, where his journey began, was where he was happiest. This is also where he spent his final days.

Wince was a no-fuss, gentle, and kind soul who was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and easy-going nature. He never sought the spotlight but quietly touched the lives of those around him with his generosity, thoughtfulness, and willingness to lend a helping hand. His calming nature, had a remarkable ability to make people feel at ease, often sharing a joke or story that brought laughter to any gathering.

Wince dedicated 34 years of service to Imperial Oil, where he worked his way to the position of Chief Engineer on the Coastal Tankers. He took great pride in his work and retired at the young age of 53, looking forward to spending more time with family and enjoying the outdoors he loved so much.

An avid outdoorsman, Wince found peace on the water in his stage and boat, whether fishing, hunting, or simply enjoying the beauty of Newfoundland’s coastline.

A gifted woodworker, Wince’s workshop was a place where creativity and craftsmanship came together. He could often be found building model boats, his well-known signature serving trays, beautiful furniture, and countless other projects. Wince even hand crafted his own urn. His work reflected the patience and precision he brought to everything he did, leaving his family with treasured keepsakes that will be cherished for generations.

His workshop, sheds and stage were always meticulously organized and clean, a reflection of the pride and care he brought to everything.

Above all else, Wince was devoted to his family. He was an extraordinary grandfather who delighted in every moment spent with his three grand daughters. With endless patience and a gentle spirit, he taught them how to catch and clean fish, shared his love of the outdoors, and ended many days reading bedtime stories. His greatest joy was creating memories with them, and the lessons he shared will remain with them forever.

A devoted dog lover, Wince also held a special place in his heart for his granddogs, always having a lap for them.

Wince leaves behind a legacy of kindness, quiet strength, hard work, and unconditional love. He will be remembered not only for the things he built with his hands, but for the lives he shaped with his heart.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Corey Billard for the special bond he shared with Wince and for always being there and someone Wince could count on.

They also wish to sincerely thank neighbours Bernice and Tom for their kindness in always keeping an eye on their home and ensuring everything was ready upon their arrival each season. Special appreciation is also extended to the staff of Dr. Charles L. LeGrow Health Centre for the compassionate care and attention they provided to Wince.

He was predeceased by his son, Glen Billard, brothers, Onslow (Melita) Billard, Clyde (Pauline) Billard, Ward (Tryphena) Billard, mother and father-in-law, Arthur & Mildred Farrell, sister-in-law, Pat (Gord) Sloan, and brother-in-law Jim Billard.

In keeping with Wince’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends may visit Oceanside Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 1st, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. with prayer service starting at 3:45 p.m., with Joan Chaisson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wince’s memory can be made to a charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Oceanside Funeral Home, 23 Read Street, Port aux Basques.
