Aunt Martha was such a wise and gracious woman. An example of her kindness was how she phoned me on the other side of the world with words of sympathy and encouragement when my Bernard Downey passed away recently. Now I appreciate how special our visit to her was last August when we were in the valley for the family reunion. She was so proud of all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, introducing those we'd never met through their photos on her wall and telling us interesting tidbits about them. She will live on in the hearts of all of them.
Now she can rest close to her beloved James; no more need for the recording on the fridge.
Kia kaha -be strong together.

We met "Aunt Martha" while she was visiting Jean and Warren Grange, here in Tacoma, Washington a few years back. What a gracious, warm, friendly woman. We both felt as though we had known her forever. She was instantly your friend and made you feel comfortable. We always looked forward to her visits to the Pacific NW, and will miss her.

Debbie, Andy, Walter, Gloria, Mary, Martin, Agnes, Joan & Teresa we were so sad to hear about your Mom's passing. Your Mom was such a wonderful woman. Her joy in her family, particularly her 9 children, was always evident. Her death is a great loss for all of you and your families, but also for all the people of the Valley. She was always there when there was a need and was such a special, humble and gracious person, a true lady. She will be missed. With lots of love and great memories Betty Ann & Frank

Dear Debbie & all Downey family, we are very sorry that kind, sweet Martha has passed away. We only met her a few years ago when our families celebrated Shane’s wedding to our daughter Amanda. Martha’s friendly and welcoming manner made it feel like we always knew her. She was genuinely interested in others making them feel at ease & comfortable. Roland and I are fortunate to have spent time in Martha’s Codroy Valley home while sharing in her wonderful meals and “down home” hospitality. Our sympathy goes out to all her family at this sad time. Take care of each other.

One of Aunt Martha's many nieces, I wish to express my condolences at the loss of such a lovely lady. Aunt Martha always had an open door policy and made you feel special when you came to visit. On our second last family reunion Aunt Martha invited us all to a Brunch (Breakfast or lunch). The food was amazing, varied, home made and fed seemingly hundreds of us. Aunt Martha seemed relaxed and had a smile for everyone. She will remain, in my mind, an incredible woman.

We were very saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved and beautiful aunt Martha. When the Briggses from the west would visit the Valley, we would always get the warmest and kindest of receptions from Martha who was a beautiful soul.
She also would always send the most thoughtful small gifts and cards through the years to keep our connection vibrant. We will miss her dearly and will keep all her immediate family in our prayers.
Love,
The Briggs family from Calgary

Martha was always so welcoming and loving. Upon meeting my husband Douglas’ aunt I was upswept by her thoughtful kindness. When Douglas and I got engaged Martha sent items to place in my hope chest and always thought to send us handwritten cards for Christmas as well as the birth of our daughter. She was in our thoughts often and we were comforted to know she spent most of her time after her husband’s passing visiting her children and grandkids. She will be greatly missed by our family but we take comfort knowing she is happily back with James. Our sincerest condolences to her family. Xoxo

My memory is of washing beet greens in the kitchen sink...there was no end to the beet greens and I was in awe that she could fit them in, clean them and process them so quickly! I had never seen so many greens in one place...and we ate them all! A memory of very happy times, amongst so many of my cousins...summertime in the Valley. I never saw Aunt Martha cross, amazing when I think of some of the pickles we could land ourselves in.
I've been to the Valley only a handful of times since those wonderful years, but I hold the memories and the people very close to my heart. Aunt Martha was so very special, and my heart is with all of you as you send off your Mom to reunite with your Dad.
Love you all,
Estelle
