It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lewis “Mick” McNeil announces his passing on Monday, July 22nd, 2024 at his home with his loving family by his side at the age of 76. Born in Port Aux Basques, he was the son of the late James and Mollie (Nee Battiste) McNeil. Leaving to mourn with fond and cherished memories his loving family including wife Kathleen (nee Furlong) of 54 years, son Terry (Rebecca Moyes), as well as granddaughters Kate and Ash who he adored. He will never be forgotten by his brothers, John “Humpty” McNeil (Rose Porter), Wayne (Paulette) McNeil, Donnie (Glenda) McNeil and his sister, Donna (Claude) Bragg. He leaves sisters and brothers in-law Patsy (Ian) Hunter, Eileen Furlong, Betty (Ron) Howse, Helen (Wayne) Gosse, plus a large circle of nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. Mick was predeceased by his in-laws Elizabeth and Patrick Furlong, his sister Linda, brother Gord (Marie), sister-in-law Holly McNeil, brothers-in-laws Bernard, Terrance, Gerald and Jim Furlong. Mick was a dedicated hockey volunteer for Port Aux Basques Minor Hockey for many years and the General Manager of the Port aux Basques Centennials. He also started the recreational hockey league in Port aux Basques in the late 1970s. Mick was well known as the Service Manager of Spencer’s Auto and later Jean’s Garage in Port Aux Basques. Mick and Kathleen moved to Edmonton in 1997 where he worked in the RV industry with Trailblazer RV. In 2008, they moved back to the province to be closer to family and he worked for Islander RV in St. John’s. He loved the outdoors and for many years enjoyed backcountry snowmobiling, salmon and trout fishing, moose hunting and exploring the wilderness as it brought him inner peace and happiness. In later years, he relished his time at his cabin on George’s Lake with his loving wife Kathleen and the circle of friends they had there. He also loved time spent with his siblings on the long-held family property in South Branch whether moose hunting, rabbit catching, playing cards or celebrating a family member milestone. He will be surely missed by family and those who knew him well. In keeping with Mick’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
